3. THE ATKINS DIET IS SAFE AND HEALTHY. The vast majority of studies show the Atkins diet to be extremely healthy, in comparison to other conventional weight loss and lifestyle diets. Nearly every study shows the Atkins diet the winner in reducing cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. In addition, many cases of acid reflux, sleep apnea, and diabetes have either had the symptoms reduced or completely disappear while on the Atkins diet.

1. THE ATKINS DIET BURNS FAT TOO QUICKLY. The primary concern here is toxic overload. When toxins enter you body, either from environmental sources or from additives in prepared foods, your body's defense mechanism will quickly try to eliminate them through the liver and kidneys. Quite often the overload is such that the body will also hide some of these toxins in your fat cells. When burning fat these toxins are released again into your bloodstream. You can experience toxic overload when you burn fat too fast, as in the first weeks or months of the Atkins diet.
2. THE ATKINS DIET CAUSES FATIGUE. Yes, initially it does - for a couple of reasons. First, switching fuels from glucose to ketones is stressful to the body. It's a drastic change in your metabolism. You might say it's similar to mild drug withdrawal. Many people actually do have a "carb addiction" and not even realize it. 3. THE ATKINS DIET LACKS GOOD NUTRITION. Plant life is the basic nutritional source for all living creatures, including humans. Apple Cinnamon Coffee Cake (12 to 14 servings)

For the Apple Filling and Topping:
2 T cinnamon
5 T sugar
5 to 6 cups sliced apples (I used Granny Smiths)
For the cake:
2 c sugar
1 c applesauce
4 t vanilla
1/2 c orange juice
pinch salt
4 egg equivalents, lightly beaten
3 c unbleached all-purpose flour
1 T baking powder
1 t nutmeg
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 12-cup tube or bundt pan with Pam.
Combine cinnamon and sugar and set aside 1 tablespoon. Toss prepared
apples with remainder and set aside.
For the cake, whisk together sugar, applesauce, vanilla, oj, salt, and
eggs. Combine flour, baking powder, and nutmeg and fold into sugar mixture.
Spoon a little more than one third of the batter into prepared pan. Cover
with half of apple mixture, then spoon in remaining batter and apple
slices. Sprinkle top lightly with the reserved cinnamon-sugar.
Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour or until done. Loosen sides with a
butter knife, then invert cake onto a plate for serving.

acorn-squash-breakfast recipe
From: "Ross, Lynne"I buy two large acorn squash at the beginning of every week. I microwave the
squash and then scoop out the soft flesh and mash it all into a plastic
container and refrigerate as it is then ready to use by the cup as I desire.
My breakfast favorite is :
1 cup mashed acorn squash
1/3 to 1/2 cup soy milk
1 teaspoon butter buds
1/4 teas cinnamon
1/8 teas nutmeg
dash salt and pepper
2 teaspoons brown sugar ( or sugar replacement )
1/2 teas vanilla or maple flavor extract
In a blender process all ingredients until well mixed. It may look a bit
runny, but upon heating it this mixture will thicken.
After blending pour into a pan ( or use a microwave safe bowl) and add 3
teaspoons millet grain ( or rolled oats if you prefer ) heat until slightly
bubbly, let cool and enjoy !!
p.s. adding 1/2 a mashed banana to the mixture in the blender or 1/4 cup
crushed pineapple is nice too !

Where Diets Go Wrong
When we discover that we are heavier than we want to be, we have a natural inclination to eat less food. We may skip lunch or eat only a tiny amount of our dinner in the hope that if we eat less our body will burn off some of its fat. But that is not necessarily true. Eating less actually makes it more difficult to lose weight.
Keep in mind that the human body took shape millions of years ago, and at that time there were diets. The only low-calorie event in people's lives was starvation. Those who could cope with a temporary lack of food were the ones who survived. Our bodies, therefore, have developed this built-in mechanism to help us survive in the face of low food intake.
When researchers compare overweight and thin people, they find that they are roughly the same number of calories. What makes overweight people different is the amount of fat that they eat. Thin people tend to eat less fat and more complex carbohydrates.
Losing weight is not something one can do overnight. A carefully planned weight loss program requires common sense and certain guidelines. Unfortunately, there's a lot of misinformantion floating around and lots of desperate people are easily duped and ripped off.
Every day one can open a magazine or newspaper and see advertisements touting some new product, pill or patch that will take excess weight off quickly. Everyone seems to be looking for that "magic" weight loss pill. Millions of Americans are trying to lose weight, spending billions of dollars every year on diet programs and products. Often they do lose some weight. But, if you check with the same people five years later, you will find that nearly all have regained whatever weight they lost.
A survey was done recently to try and determine if any commercial diet program could prove long-term success. Not a single program could do so. So rampant has the so-called diet industry become with new products and false claims that the FDA has now stepped in and started clamping down.
Being seriously overweight and particularly obesity can develop into a number of diseases and serious health problems, and it is now a known fact that when caloric intake is excessive, some of the excess frequently is saturated fat.
The myth is that people get heavy by eating too many calories. Calories are a consideration it's true, but overall they are not the cause of obesity in America today. Americans actually take in fewer calories each day than they did at the beginning of the century. If calories alone were the reason we become overweight, we should all be thin. But we are not. Collectively, we are heavier than ever. Partly, it is because we are more sedentary now. But equally, as important is the fact that the fat content of the American diet has changed dramatically.
People who diet without exercising often get fatter with time. Although your weight may initially drop while dieting, such weight loss consists mostly of water and muscle. When the weight returns, it comes back as fat. To avoid getting fatter over time, increase your metabolism by exercising regularly.
Select an exercise routine that you are comfortable with and remember that walking is one of the best and easiest exercises for strengthening your bones, controlling your weight and toning your muscles.
Sensible Diet Tips
Start your diet with a food diary, record everything you eat, what you were doing at the time, and how you felt. That tells you about yourself, your temptation, the emotional states that encourage you to snack and may help you lose once you see how much you eat.
Instead of eating the forbidden piece of candy, brush your teeth. If you're about to cheat, allow yourself a treat, then eat only half a bite and throw the other half away. When hunger hits, wait 10 minutes before eating and see if it passes. Set attainable goals. Don't say, "I want to lose 50 pounds." Say, "I want to lose 5 pounds a month." Get enough sleep but not too much. Try to avoid sugar. Highly sweetened foods tend to make you crave more.
Drink six to eight glasses of water a day. Water itself helps cut down on water retention because it acts as a diuretic. Taken before meals, it dulls the appetite by giving you that "full feeling." Diet with a buddy. Support groups are important, and caring people can help one another succeed. Start your own, even with just one other person.
Substitute activity for eating. When the cravings hit, go to the "Y" or health club if possible; or dust, or walk around the block. This is especially helpful if you eat out of anger.
If the pie on the counter is just too great a temptation and you don't want to throw it away, freeze it. If you're a late-night eater, have a carbohydrate, such as a slice of bread of a cracker, before bedtime to cut down on cravings. Keep an orange slice or a glass of water by your bed to quiet the hunger pangs that wake you up.
If you use food as a reward, establish a new reward system. Buy yourself a non-edible reward. Write down everything you eat - - everything - including what you taste when you cook. If you monitor what you eat, you can't go off your diet.
Weigh yourself once a week at the same time. Your weight fluctuates constantly and you can weigh more at night than you did in the morning, a downer if you stuck to your diet all day. Make dining an event. East from your own special plate, on your own special placemat, and borrow the Japanese art of food arranging to make your meal, no matter how meager, look lovely. This is a trick that helps chronic over-eaters and bingers pay attention to their food instead of consuming it unconsciously.
Don't shop when you're hungry. You'll only buy more fattening food. Avoid finger foods that are easy to eat in large amounts. Avoid consuming large quantities of fattening liquids, which are so easy to overdo. And this includes alcoholic beverages. Keep plenty of crunchy foods like raw vegetables and air-popped fat-free popcorn on hand. They're high in fiber, satisfying and filling. Leave something on your plate, even if you are a charter member of the Clean The Plate Club. It's a good sign that you can stop eating when you want to, not just when your plate is empty.
Lose weight for yourself, not to please your husband, your parents or your friends. Make the kitchen off-limits at any time other than mealtime. Always eat at the table, never in front of the TV set or with the radio on. Concentrate on eating every mouthful slowly and savoring each morsel. Chew everything from 10 to 20 times and count! Never skip meals.

20 Ways To Lose Weight - Part 1
What do you think is the strongest muscle in your body? Is it your back, your legs, or is it a muscle you've never considered as one of the ways to lose weight?
Most people that struggle in their ways to lose weight and get in shape don't utilize the biggest weapon they have in their battle of the bulge...their brain. Now don't get me wrong...I don't mean people are not smart enough, it's just they don't realize the inherent power that lies in that blob of gray matter.
Using our mind correctly is one the most powerful ways to lose weight, and can also be used to improve other areas of our lives as well. Our emotions, thoughts, actions, habits, mindsets, beliefs, doubts, etc. all have either a positive, or negative influence on what we say we want to accomplish.
And some (I would say most) of us have been programmed into self-sabotaging actions that hinder our progress, whether we're aware of this or not.
Listen, I'm no different from anybody else that has struggled trying to figure out the best ways to lose weight and get in shape. I have my own personal negative behaviors and genetics that make it hard for me to get in shape. Why do you think it took me so long to finally get there (8 years of no results vs. 12 weeks and a great body by using my brain)? Sounds simple, I know, but it REALLY works!
I've seen it happen time and time again. Those that followed through and achieved the body of their dreams were the ones that had a deep-rooted desire to change. This yearning for a new body was stronger than anything that attempted to prevent them from achieving it.
From family or friends feeling threatened by their decision to better themselves (and doing anything to get them "off course" and back to their old selves again), to special occasions that tempted them with foods not exactly conducive to a better body, their reasons to fail were numerous.
However, the pain of not getting their new body was greater than the pressures of those people and things attempting to derail them...their need to better their body was more important than anything else.
Stop here and reread that last sentence. You need to find that reason or reasons that will overcome and surpass anything that may be thrown at you. And I promise you there will be obstacles and roadblocks that will present themselves to you on your way to your new body. Take a few quiet moments and reflect on why changing your body is important to you. When you find it, write it down. You will refer to it often.
On the other hand I've also seen many well-intentioned folks that told me they did have a deep reason to change but somehow could not articulate it to me. They would be the ones that invariably wouldn't finish their program and would provide me some kind of excuse for not being able to.
These excuses all sounded perfectly logical - to them - but I knew they were all just excuses. And were the consequence of not finding that deep-rooted desire to want to change in the first place.
It really wasn't their fault though because they just fell into the trap of failing to plan. Part of the plan to success relies in the area of preparation. And the very first step required is to perform this little exercise I have just asked you to do.
Think about this for a second. If you can't exert the small effort required in finding your reasons to change right here and right now, what makes you think you will be able to exert the much greater efforts required for you to change your body?
[this might be a sobering thought for some of you!]
There seems to be few people in this world who actually accomplish what they set out to do. Heck, there are very few people who even say they are going to do anything. But I believe you are here truly looking for an answer. And if you can listen and trust in what I'm saying to you then maybe you can find that lasting solution you are looking for.
By harnessing the power of your "WHY" you will be taking a great leap forward towards the eventual success of your program.
Listen, it can't be because you want to lose 20 lbs, or to fit into your bathing suit this summer. You see, these reasons are not important enough to propel you forward...through thick and thin, and the obstacles that life always seems to throw at you.
I can almost guarantee you will experience hurdles during your transformation experience. It's just about inevitable. Life is way too busy and unpredictable for there not to be something that "gets in the way" of achieving your physique transformation goals.
That's why your reasons for wanting to change have to be stronger than the obstacles and roadblocks you will encounter. These barriers can stop you in your tracks unless your underlying motivation for changing your body is greater.
And that's why you really need to spend some quality time alone and find that reason(s) so important to you that you will be able to commit to changing your body no matter what.
And I can't answer that for you because I can't look inside your head. I know for me it was the initial prizes that were offered by the contest I won. A brand new Corvette, $10,000, and lots of other goodies were sure enticements for just about anyone.
But after a careful examination I realized it really was more that just the prizes for me. I understood that winning this contest could really give me the impetus and the platform to be fully involved in this business I loved. Maybe even be able to do it for a living one day. That's what really motivated me then and today.
